The Goodship is Fairdale’s top-of-the-line steel road bike. We set out to design a bike with race-inspired geometry that still retained Fairdale sensibilities. The bike is a mix of some tried and true technologies that have been paired up with some of the most modern manufacturing techniques and resources available.
One of the things we are most excited about is that the frame will be made using our seamless, Japanese, Drawnright tubeset. It’s a unique opportunity to have complete control over the butting, shape and size of each tube. Every Drawnright tubeset is also heat-treated to precise tolerances to further improve their strength and ride quality. The end result is a completely custom, high-quality 4130 chromoly tubeset that is specific to each size of the frame.
Paired with an Enve carbon fiber fork, and a full SRAM Force 22 group. This bike is ready to ride!
Custom Drawnright tubing, butted per size.
When we sat down to create the Goodship, we had a long-running relationship with one of the world’s best high-end titanium, chromoly and aluminum frame manufacturing facilities on our side. With the ability to create custom tube sets at our fingertips, we started with a blank sheet of paper and designed the frame exactly how we wanted it, and then we designed our own butting and tube shaping to get the precise weight and ride-feel that we were looking for. Fairdale’s Drawnright tube sets start with seamless, superior-grade Japanese chromoly, and they are then drawn and butted to our exact specifications. Having the freedom to fully design the frame inside and out is an advantage and an option that most frame makers never come across, and it is a choice that is usually totally out reach for a custom small-batch frame builder. After butting and forming the tube, Drawnright tube sets are then heat-treated prior to assembly to further improve the frame’s strength and ride quality.
While it would undoubtedly be easier for Fairdale to pick a tube set off-the-shelf and be able to simply say that the tubing comes from a respected brand name, it wouldn’t be the “best” way for us to make a frame. By doing all of the extra work ourselves, creating our own custom seamless tube sets, and taking advantage of features like the Goodship’s oversized downtube, we ended up with a frame and fork set that is light and strong with an outstanding ride quality.
